Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary
Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is an 13,000-acre wilderness area and wildlife sanctuary of the National Audubon Society, with nearly 200 bird species in temporary or permanent residence. The sanctuary contains the largest known stand of virgin bald cypress, some more than 500 years old. Alligators can be seen regularly from the 2.25-mile boardwalk. Pets are not permitted. Everglades Wonder Gardens
Everglades Wonder Gardens was opened in 1936 as a refuge for injured animals. The facility now is home to a large collection of native birds as well as panthers, alligators, Florida crocodiles, flamingos, bears and otters. Otter shows and alligator feedings are offered. Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens
Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens is 1.75 mi. n. via US 41 to jct. Fleischmann Blvd., then .5 mi. e. to 1590 Goodlette-Frank Rd. Founded in 1919, the 52-acre zoo features a self-guiding trail that winds through a botanical garden populated by animals. Visitors can observe natural animal behavior complemented by wildlife footage and graphics during two feature shows, Planet Predator and Serpents: Fangs & Fiction. Sanibel Lighthouse
Sanibel Lighthouse is 1.5 mi. e. of the causeway on Periwinkle Way. Built in 1884, this Sanibel landmark was electrified in 1962. The lighthouse and cottages are closed to visitors, however the parklike grounds and nearby beach are popular places to view sunsets. The lighthouse is reached via a boardwalk through foliage inhabited by wildlife. Local lore credits an 1890s lightkeeper with planting the first periwinkles on Sanibel Island. The Holocaust Museum of Southwest Florida
The Holocaust Museum of Southwest Florida is at 4760 Tamiami Tr. N. More than 11 million Jews were victims of the Holocaust. The museum depicts the grim reality of the suffering endured through donated items such as armbands and attire worn by the prisoners, medical items and photographs.
