Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve
This 246,000-acre area, the largest in the US reserve system, preserves the Apalachicola Bay and a large portion of the Apalachicola River, adjoining floodplains, sounds, and three barrier islands. Ft. Gadsden
In 1814, the British built a fort on this 75-acre area as a base for recruitment during the War of 1812. The fort was later destroyed by US forces, but in 1818, Andrew Jackson ordered another built as a supply base. Occupied by Confederate forces from 1862 to 1863, some earthworks remain visible. Open-sided kiosk has miniature replica of Fort Gadsden, interpretive exhibits. Fishing; hiking trails, interpretive trail, picnicking pavilion. Best Western lodging is nearby. Historic Apalachicola
Once a thriving antebellum cotton port, river city Apalachicola is being rediscovered by tourists for its quiet, historic charm. With more than 50 historic sites-the largest collection of pre-Civil War architecture in the state-there is plenty here to keep visitors busy. This area is also known for the particularly sweet and succulent Apalachicola Bay oysters farmed and harvested where the river meets the sea. Best Western lodging is nearby.

John Gorrie Museum State Park

St. George Island State Park
More than 1,800 acres with miles of undeveloped beaches, dunes, forest, and marshes. Swimming, saltwater fishing; hiking, picnicking, backwoods and improved camping (hook-ups).
